A loan of $20,000 helped to buy a pickup truck, hire more local staff, and improve housing in more favelas.

Moradigna's story

Mattheus grew up in Jardim Pantanal, a poor area of Sao Paulo Brazil built on an area of wetland at the edge of the city. Growing up Mattheus saw his community flooded many times. High humidity, frequent flooding, and low-incomes meant residents were forced to live in housing that was permanently damp and in constant need of repair.

Like more than 40 million Brazilians, Mattheus lived in a house that suffered from residual damp, mold, and poor ventilation, all factors that can contribute to serious health problems. After time spent working in building and construction, and after rebuilding his home, Mattheus decided it was time to give back to his community and founded Moradigna in 2014.

Moradigna is Social Business that provides construction and renovation services to low-income households in Jardim Pantanal, helping residents improve their homes and their health. Mattheus explains, “A house is the most important part of many peoples lives. When families realize they can transform their entire home, they feel empowered, knowing that they can live in a better environment. Its is not a privilege; it is a human right. ” Currently, Moradigna employees +22 workers from the local area who have transformed more than 100 homes, improving the lives of over 500 people. This loan, which is part of a larger financing through Yunus Social Business, will allow Moradigna to purchase a small pickup truck, employ more local people and expand operations to enable other poor neighborhoods across Sao Paulo to benefit.

This loan is special because:

It funds small and medium enterprises that can create jobs but are riskier.
