A loan of $425 helped to buy a bulk supply of charcoal and vegetables.

Bertha's story

Bertha is a retailer of charcoal and vegetables in her neighborhood. Charcoal is a very popular source of energy for cooking in almost all traditional Ghanaian homes. Bertha obtains her supply of charcoal from the village of Kasoa and sells it to her customers.

Bertha is 44 years old and married with five children who are all in school. She is a very hardworking and resourceful mother. She wants to use this loan to buy charcoal and vegetables in bulk. She hopes to increase her savings to pay for her children’s educational fees. She belongs to the "Odo ye De" (Love is Sweet) Trust Group. In this group, members guarantee for one another as social collateral to repay their loans.
