A loan helped purchase two pieces of equipment that allow me to operate more efficiently.

Keith's story

My name is Keith Lockerby, and I grew up in suburban Philadelphia. I was a semi-professional bicycle racer (BMX) and still love to ride. I live in the East Passyunk neighborhood of South Philadelphia with my wife, Lauren, and dog, Betty. We love this neighborhood and have built our lives to be as much a part of it as possible. Lauren is a teacher at the local elementary school, and my shop is just a few blocks from our home. The older I get, the more I realize the significance of being an active part of the community you live in.

My education is in business and finance. I spent about 10 years as an accountant, working my way up to comptroller for a firm in Philadelphia. While a rewarding career, it was not what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. While my office career was under way, and the years were passing by, I always rented a small studio space to pursue my woodworking hobby. I'd spend my nights and weekends working on projects for my own home, all the while having the luxury of being able to make mistakes (and learn from them) while not depending on making a living from woodworking. As these projects became more involved and I was now making pieces for other people, I received immense support and encouragement from friends and family that this is maybe something I should pursue full time.

My first real commission was actually from my boss. It was way too ambitious of a project to take on given my skill level and shop resources, but that didn't stop me. I learned more during that project than I did during any of my formal education. Even though I went way over my timeline and actually lost money, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I put my notice in about 2 years later and committed to supporting myself and my family by being a full time furniture maker. I moved on to furniture making full time about 3-4 years ago and haven't looked back since.
