Abena's story

In addition to being an entrepreneur, Abena A., 43, takes care of her four kids. All of her children are pursuing education at the primary and junior high school levels. She wants to make sure that she is financially able to support all of her children to the highest degree of education possible. She lives with her husband, who is a driver, and her children in their own house in Oda, a farming community in the Eastern region of Ghana. Abena is a food vendor and sells rice and stew to support her husband in providing for the family. She has been in business for four years now.

Abena is expecting higher profits if she receives her loan. She will be adding soft drinks and meat pies to supplement her income. Her food is highly patronized because of its good quality and taste. She also wants to procure fresh rice in bulk .

She is a member of a community trust group called “Nyame asem” (translates to "God’s word"). Members in this group guarantee for one another as social collateral to access the loan and support one another in handling repayment of the loan.
