Elena's story

Elena is 44 years old and lives with her husband and children in a house they own. Elena and her husband have worked in agriculture for 20 years, planting the native products of their area like potatoes and oca. They also raise animals. She works hard, so that after several months she can obtain the fruits of her labor. Therefore, she gets up very early to prepare the food and to get her children ready for school. Everyday she feeds her animals and then goes to her plots of land, that are far away, where she looks over her plants to see how they are doing. She then returns to the stable to check on her animals. After several months of this busy routine, Elena and her husband sell what they have harvested and the animals they have fattened. They use what they earn to maintain their family.

For many years this work has been the only source of income for the family. And for Elena, this work will continue to be the main source of income for the family. This is her twelfth loan with MFP. She is one of the oldest members of her communal bank and is happy to have been with them for so long being seen as responsible and easy to work with. The money Elena is requesting will be invested in the purchase of sacks of fertilizer for her next planting.
