Sophia's story

Sophia E. is a 49-year-old married mother of six children, three of whom are currently in school. She lives with her family in the village of St Peter's at Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana.

Sophia has been in business for 22 years and she works as a food vendor selling banku with fried fish. Banku is prepared from milled maize grains and is eaten with hot pepper or soup. Sophia has many customers since banku is enjoyed by many Ghanaians for breakfast, lunch and supper. She wants to use her loan to buy more raw materials such as bags of maize, meat, fish, vegetables and firewood. Her hope is to increase her income in order to support her children’s education.
