A loan of $10,000 helped fill gaps in our cash flow while we gear up for 2 large contracts we just signed.

Jessie's story

I founded Building Hugger in 2012 with a mission of developing services focused on stewardship of Detroit's built environment. At first I offered traditional design services, but quickly realized that my work was much more valuable if I offered more than ideas -- so I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

In 2012 I purchased a property in the tax auction and spent the following summer partnered with the Detroit Training Center cleaning it up and outlining a business plan for its development. In the spring of 2014 I took a historic window trades training through the Michigan Historic Preservation Network in an effort to save money on the job, but in a climate where skilled trades are dying and good contractors are hard to come by, my most promising business opportunity found me.

2015 has been a whirlwind as the business's growth has been exponential. BH has become a go-to source for window restoration and repair -- a critical trade as Detroiters reinvest in their neighborhoods. Our operations have grown to provide reliable employment for not only myself, but 7 other Detroiters, most of which have been trained in-house.

My work challenges the norms of what people think of an architect as being, but this transformation has come from listening to the needs of Detroit. I am the most effective steward of Detroit's architectural heritage when I am helping other Detroiters be good stewards of their homes and businesses. It is this triple bottom line approach that drives everything we do.

Detroit is my blood; my story. Everyday when I lace up my worn-in work boots and slip on my paint-splattered jeans I think how fitting it is that this is my life. I am honored to breath life back into a city I love, humbled by the support I have received, and energized by the work still to be done!

This loan is special because:

It helps a business that supports Detroit's architectural heritage.
