A loan of $10,000 helped acquire new equipment, bring in sunglasses inventory and increase our marketing.

Theresa's story

I grew up in a small midwestern town in Illinois. Outside of the classroom, I had a love and passion for sports and music. I attended Spelman College, a private all women's college in Atlanta. I then attended law school, and after graduating quickly realized I would need to become an entrepreneur, thus opening my private practice. During this period, lawyers I knew were being downsized and had to maintain more than one job. While still practicing, I started an indie record label, which focused on licensing music throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

In 2004, my journey continued with a relocation to Charlotte, NC after marrying Akbar, my best friend and future business partner. Akbar has a Masters in Social Work with an entrepreneurial background in sports. Shortly after our marriage, we decided to combine both of our skill sets and passions for business, community, sports and entertainment. This inspired us to develop an urban sports initiative by converting a defunct ice hockey rink inside a struggling shopping mall into an indoor soccer and multipurpose center called the Concrete2Green Futsal Center.

Unfortunately, due to the failing real estate market and economy, after a year and a half we were forced to close the Center after the entire mall closed in the summer of 2010. Prior to the mall closing, I took a position in New York, where we are now proud to call Brooklyn our home.

My dreams for the future include building Rise Sport into a leading sports and customizable sunglasses brand, and creating a business that the younger generations in our family can see what's possible with hard work, perseverance and the will to never give up on your dreams, regardless of the obstacles.
