A loan of $5,000 helped buy a digital microscope to examine the scalp, a steamer to deep treat hair and the final costs complete my Trichology certification.

Jeannine's story

I grew up in the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. I grew up poor with no running water and no electricity for years. My father abandoned me when I was 9 years old and soon after, my mother died from cancer when I was 13. But I refused to let this stop me. I pushed forward and worked hard for everything I have today. After 26 years in Trinidad, I moved to the United States. I was looking for a change in my life and was inspired by the opportunities that I saw.

I am a licensed cosmetologist working in New York City. I discovered cosmetology 22 years ago when I was taking free vocational classes at the community center. I had originally tried to join a sewing class to become a seamstress, like my mother, but all the classes were full. Yet as fate would have it, there was space in a class on hair-styling. Minutes into the class, I had discovered my talent. The class came natural to me. Following my passion, I became a licensed cosmetologist and about two and a half years ago, I stopped working for others and started working for myself, running my own small business.

I am currently studying to be a certified trichologist. As a cosmetologist, I always enjoyed interacting with my clients, offering advice, and informing them of the latest research. This is reason why I wanted to become a trichologist. My dream is to build my own successful business and tricology practice working with people who are experiencing hair loss and scalp issues. I want to be able to help my clients and work with them to build a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition as they get older. I like the holistic aspect of trichology. With my work, I can help my clients in all parts of their lives and restore their confidence. In this business, part of the profits will be going to help the poor and needy. I am a Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ and want to help the poor as He did.
