A loan of $10,000 helped purchase the tractor and implements necessary to efficiently operate my 15 acre organic farm, providing huge gains in productivity and profitability.

Michael's story

After growing up in Florida, I spent many years building a successful hospitality career. I managed restaurants and catered companies, banquets, weddings and events. I took great joy in providing others with an incredible food experience. During this career I found my way to beautiful Colorado.

In the winter of 2007 I had an “Aha” moment that changed my life trajectory. There must be a better way to eat than settling for the poor quality food, trucked from all corners of the globe to the mountain communities of Colorado. With this inspiration I began looking for a solution. I discovered the concept of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and realized I could build accessibility and connections between organic farmers and local families. Over the span of 4 years I was able to supply food to over 250 families each season through CSA’s, provide restaurants a direct connection to farms and sell produce at Farmers Markets all throughout the Central Rocky Mountains.

As my passion for nutrient-dense, high-quality food grew, I decided that just providing locals with great food wasn’t enough; I needed to grow my own. In 2011 I started to learn to grow food by working as an intern at a Farm Incubator in Boulder and then starting my own farm, Kilt Farm.

It has been a long road from a fast food job at 14 to Organic Eco-Agricultural Farmer at 48, and I could not be more excited to be here. After acquiring a lease on Boulder County Open Space land, I have 15 acres to grow amazing produce and more importantly build vibrant soil. It is my vision that the farmers of the future must create a healthier and more vibrant eco-system, every year, in order to combat climate change and grow the most nutritious and healthy food possible.
