Angela's story

Born in St Louis, I have been in Milwaukee since I was 3 months old. After the death of her father, my mom who was 18 at the time, returned with my 2 y/o brother and I to live with my paternal grandma. My father was stationed overseas.

I have always been an entrepreneur, opting to relinquish my dream of being a vet or MD after delivering a litter of 10 pups when I was 12 which I thought was cool, only to realize while attending an early medical program during middle school, I could not stand the sight of blood-Go figure. I had a knack for developing projects or businesses people flocked too.

With the exception of the decade I spent in Atlanta ( I had vowed to never return), I like many people of color felt frustrated, disappointed and betrayed by the city I loved so much. I came back home to Milwaukee due to the stillborn death of my youngest son. I was 43 at the time.

Today, I am the granny to 5 wondrous boys ranging in age from 2 to 12 which works well for me. My grown children are finally all in the same city as Mom! One of my daughters is my partner in crime and mom to my youngest and NO SECRET FAVORITE of the 5 grandkids, she is That Salsa Lady!! He was born 2 months early and didn't begin walking until 6 months ago.

My oldest daughter sold me a house in August, it needs lots of work, yet it’s a nice size and sits on an enormous lot. We are slowly converting the area to an active urban garden. I completed the facade pretty much alone. My neighbors and passersby say how much better they felt watching my grandson and I working away at this old house.

Even after he was struck by a hit and run driver of a stolen SUV, I continued to work on the house and then his chores. Boy did he try to milk the latter! KIDS or should I say GRAND kids!
