A loan of $2,400 helped to buy hoophouse materials, seed-starting supplies, fencing supplies, hand tools, and irrigation equipment for our start-up market garden operation.

Brandon & Caitlin's story

Brandon Wickes and Caitlin Arnold have been dreaming of starting their own horse-powered vegetable farm for the past three years.

It all began when Brandon met a man named John who raised Shire draft horses near their home on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. Brandon, who studied Environmental Studies while at university in California, was fixated on the idea of an ecologically-friendly, non-fossil fuel intensive approach to growing vegetables, and knew farming with horses was the solution. Caitlin, who grew up riding horses, was immediately on board with the idea. However, the problem that neither of them had ever actually worked with draft horses remained. Thus, when the opportunity for Caitlin and Brandon to go work with Ken and Martha Laing at their horse-powered vegetable farm in Southwestern Ontario presented itself, they knew what they needed to do: pack up the car and move out East.

While in Ontario, they took to this revered skill of farming with draft horses, and knew that this was the life for them. Meanwhile, they also knew that they must return to their home state of Washington, and share this skill with their community, friends, and family.

Soon after, two simultaneous things happened that projected them onto the path they are currently on. First, they found a property for lease through Washington's FarmLink program, near Caitlin's childhood home of Seattle. Then, they discovered the Kiva Zip loan program through their trustee, the Greenhorns. Finally, they felt like their dreams were in reach.

With the help of a successful Kiva Zip loan, and their trustee, The Greenhorns, Caitlin and Brandon hope to create the business of their dreams: Furrow Horse Farm in Morton, WA.
