A loan of $10,000 helped provide three working positions on the farm and to buy a vacuum seeder in order to access a scale at which the enterprise reaches profitability and allows for quality job creation.

Evan's story

My name is Evan, I am the owner of Steamboat Junction, a farm l launched in the spring of 2013. I have just completed a degree in Agricultural Science and Business Management, and am now looking to farm full time.

I grew up on a seventy acre organic farm just north of Ithaca, NY with my father, working draft horses. After years of hard work in the sun, my family eventually sold the farm and moved to town.

By the time I was of college age I knew I wanted to go to university to learn how to farm ecologically while maintaining profitability - I wanted to understand agricultural economics and farming systems. Throughout my studies in university, I have maintained my father's passion for the natural world while keeping my eye on the prize of providing farm financial viability.

Over the past two years I have owned and managed a vegetable and animal operation (while continuing a full-time university education), specializing in pork and garlic production. The past seasons have served as a learning template on which to grow everything I could while keeping excruciating detail on labor costs, yields, and market trends.

I am now ready to launch this business to the scale where I can provide quality jobs - and this is where you come in!
