A loan of $5,000 helped grow and expand my business as an professional artist.

Patricia's story

I was born in San Francisco but have lived my entire life in the Pacific Northwest. Currently, and for my entire adult life, my home has been Oregon. My older sister and I spent our summers in San Francisco with our grandparents when we were kids. Our grandparents (and mom) were from China.

My mom and grandfather owned 3 Chinese theaters in Chinatown. I have a love of film - particularly, kung fu movies. My grandfather also owned a couple of other businesses. I have many fond memories of my grandfather taking me along his walks in Chinatown checking in on business. These experiences are what planted the seed for me to start a business of my own. This year, I've registered my own business, Studio Smugbug LLC., in the state of Oregon. I have opened an Etsy shop where I can sell prints and originals of my work. I am currently continuing my work as a freelance illustrator and building my client list.

I have gone to creative symposiums and have networked at conventions with experienced freelance illustrators. I have spent hours and days learning the ins and outs of this business of art.

My specific goals include:
• Build a larger presence at conventions
• Create more prints/giclees
• License my art
• Own IP (intellectual property), original characters/stories
• Hire an assistant

My one and only desire is to succeed. That's pretty much it.
