A loan of $3,000 helped buy metal dies, hardware and military grade material, and implement marketing strategies for my company, Necessary Recycling.

Vanessa's story

I grew up working in a few of my parents stores in Newark, New Jersey throughout my childhood and teenage years. Integrity and a strong work ethic, along with doing things for the benefit of others were instilled in me at an early age.

In my first year of college, at the Stevens Institute of Technology, I got married and had my first child. During my second pregnancy, I relocated and became a single parent and received my cosmetology license from the Virginia School of Cosmetology.

With my busy schedule and steady clientele, I stopped taking new hair clients. A friend asked if I would consider taking someone she knew, Angela Greene. I instantly knew that Angela and I would become business partners when she shared her experiences, which are as follows:

She is originally from RVA but was living in Los Angeles when she created a hair system to assist her roommate who was suffering with cancer and losing her hair. Angela developed a natural hair addition technique that met the roommate's need. The technique was so unique that she began providing the service to clients from LA to Cape Town South Africa. For ten years she conducted seminars along the East Coast where she trained stylists on the technique.

Quite often Angela traveled to provide services to clients via train. While in her travels, she began to notice the excessive amount of improperly discarded tires and inner tubes along the tracks and began thinking about the environmental hazard they pose. After returning from a seminar in Maryland, she contacted a local Firestone, who gave her free reign over their supply of discarded inner tubes. Angela took what she could carry and began creating ways to recycle the inner tubes.

This was the beginning of a business venture!
