A loan of $10,000 helped build an enclosed barn and purchase a walk-in freezer.

Garrison's story

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I grew up hunting and fishing with my father and brother and I have always had a passion for the outdoors. In high school I excelled in football and was the starting fullback on our state championship team. After the season ended my senior year, my friend and I begin looking for something else to do to stay out of trouble. Another one of our friends mentioned a rotational grazing project with 4-H. I had no prior experience in agriculture and had no family ties to it, but it caught my interest. We jumped in and leased some property, built fence, ran water lines, planted rye grass, and purchased 20 calves. At the end of the six month project we sold the calves for a small profit. After participating I realized how much I enjoyed raising the calves and working the land.

I left Louisiana to attend and play football at a small college in New York City. During college I traveled the world and earned a B.S. in Marine Transportation and a USCG 3rd mate unlimited tonnage license, but throughout the experience, farming was always on my mind. I realized through living in a different region and traveling how important locally produced food is for communities and the environment. I also saw that our food industry has been going in the wrong direction for the past few decades. I knew I wanted to become part of the movement of farmers ethically raising animals with attention to the environmental sustainability. After graduating in 2009 I moved back to Louisiana and started Hollywood Livestock. Hollywood Livestock is a completely transparent forage-based farm that enables consumers to be confident in knowing where their meat comes from.
