Micah's story

Microloans are a funny thing. I grew up in a Navy family with five siblings and no allowance. My first microloan came in the form of a $5 bill given to me to enjoy the 4th of July in 2000 when I was nine years old. I used it to buy $1 fans at the dollar store and sell them at the fair for $7. That was my first three digit day.

My second Microloan came from a University professor who challenged all students to take $150 (cash that he provided) and whoever brought back the most in six weeks could keep all the money raised by everyone. This amount of seed money launched SurhRosa Consulting, which not only won the contest but also put me through the last two years of paying for Carnegie Mellon University. Now I am the CEO of Shoutside Media – one of Pittsburgh’s fasted growing Digital Marketing Agencies.

Going into our second year of business I can only image where we can be with $5,000 to help launch new initiatives. I want to see Pittsburgh embrace new media and grow into the industries which have already laid down a strong foundation. Education and Healthcare will bring us to the top, and I am excited to be a part of reclaiming our place as a national influence of the direction of our Country’s economy.

To think that where I am has everything to do with a single $5 bill only puts into focus the possibilities that Mircrofinancing can bring about.
