A loan of $5,000 helped complete the platform's functionality, stream line shopping cart, rebrand our site under Vanishing of the Bees, and put in more hours to get the job done.

Maryam's story

I grew up in Montreal, Canada. I am Egyptian by descent. I was a chubby nerd who read a lot and loved playing with worms and ladybugs.
I forged my investigative skills at the age of 13. I also loved to write. Eventually I combined my passions and studied to be an investigative journalist. I dreamt of leaving Montreal and traveling.

At 18, I decided to travel solo to Vancouver to cultivate my independence. I made a goal to volunteer at the university newspaper. I worked my way to Features Editor and took charge of the entire department. At 24, I decided to come to Los Angeles to make a name for myself. I worked for MSNBC and freelanced for several magazines including Los Angeles Times, Details and Maxim.

Eventually my colleague and i decided to make a documentary about the disappearance of the bees, which became the award-winning documentary Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Ellen Page. Making a film out of nothing is a huge sacrifice and leap of faith. But it shows my perseverance. It took five years to make that film.
