A loan of $5,000 helped transform the "look and feel" of my convenience store to include new healthy food products that my community needs.

Nelson's story

My name is Nelson Garcia. I was born and grew up in Guatemala City. After studying one year in the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, I decided to move to the United States at age 20. My first and only dream was to own a grocery market of my own. I worked in various neighborhood markets from 1989 to 2003. With 12 years of experience under my belt, I set out to become my own business owner. With the help of family and friends, I opened my first market the summer of 2003 and I was finally able to bring to life my experience for my own business. Now ten years later, I give thanks to God for allowing me to arrive at this dream and, I trust, in realizing my next dream, to own a chain of small stores that benefit my community in the mostly low-income communities which we operate.
