A loan of $5,000 helped improve the visibility of our store, grow our nursery operations, and expand our workshop offerings.

Yolanda's story

My love of good food comes from my parents and grandparents. My grandparents grew lots of their own produce, partly out of necessity, and as a way to have access to the food that was part of our culture.

I moved around a lot as a child in a military family. When my father retired from military service, our family literally put down roots by setting up a mini-farm on the outskirts of Santa Rosa, CA and planting a large vegetable garden. We also raised sheep, rabbits, chickens, cows and pigs. I learned the value of hard work, and the rewards of eating good food that our hard work helped bring to our table.

Today, my love of gardening and good food has brought me full circle. Although we live in the city, I enjoy growing food for my family and helping my children learn to grow food. We raise chicken for eggs, keep bees for honey, and of course, grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. I also enjoy sharing what I have learned with others and volunteer with our local 4-H Club.

My dream is to create a store that serves as a trusted community resource and hub for learning about urban farming and all aspects of do-it-yourself (DIY) food.
