A loan of $5,000 helped purchase a new design laptop for client meetings, new software licenses, as well as a 3D Printer to expand my design capabilities.

Marcus's story

I was born in San Antonio, Texas, to parents that had met, fell in love and married while stationed at Fort Hood. My mom was a Texas native of Mexican ancestry, and my father from rural Michigan. When I was three we moved to the Flint area where I've lived ever since. As a high school freshman my band started playing shows at Flint Local 432, an all-ages concert venue in downtown Flint. Through that I met the owners of the Flint City T-Shirt Company and started working there, staying for nine years. Along the way I bought a house and graduated from Mott Community College with an Associate’s Degree with honors in Business Management. Eventually I realized my opportunity for personal and professional growth had reached its limit at the T-shirt shop. I wanted to find a new firm and grow as a designer, but the job market was very soft in Genesee County. I received offers in cities like Saginaw and Okemos, but, wanting to stay in the Flint area, started to gravitate towards self-employment as an option. With encouragement from other entrepreneurs, including those working in the creative economy, I began writing a business plan. That led to securing start-up funds from an angel investor who had invested in Flint City T-Shirts previously, and Mark 3 was born. Currently my business is operated off an Ikea desk in my spare bedroom, but within the next year I plan to move into a space in downtown Flint.
