A loan of $1,000 helped cover the franchise fee to get my windshield repair business up and running.

Elias's story

I’ve encountered many challenges in life but am known to have a resilient spirit. I was born in the Bronx and raised in foster care. At the age of 23, I moved to Florida where I met my wife of 25 years, who was from Michigan. About 27 years ago, she and I moved to Detroit, and I’ve been here ever since. I am deeply embedded in my community!

Two years ago, my wife passed away and shortly thereafter, I became homeless. It was a hard and eye opening experience, and it was during that time that I met the Ark Association, a local non-profit that develops programs to assist people from the community with physical, mental, financial and addictive challenges in becoming more productive members of society. The Ark Association walked hand in hand with myself to help me emerge from homelessness, and I now serve on their board of directors.

Over the years, I’ve had many jobs in customer service and really enjoy interacting with people! I learned about the Thrive Detroit micro-franchise program through my work with the Ark Association and am being trained to start my own windshield repair business. This will enable me to have the working flexibility I need, given that I’ve been recovering from heart surgery. It will also channel my skills in building relationships with customers and local businesses who are willing to host me on site to provide windshield repair services.
