A loan of $5,000 helped to buy a mixer and a dough sheeter to make the bread and pastries we sell at the bakery.

Tom's story

I'm a baker. Even when I haven't been baking, I've always been a baker. It's part of who I am. So even though I've spent more than 20 years making my living in health care, the desire and the dream was to bake. I grew up in a house where there were almost always fresh-baked cookies in the cookie jar after school. Baking wasn't saved for holidays or special occasions, but was as much a part of the daily routine as was making dinner and washing the dishes. So it makes sense that my grandmother gave me a mixer as a going-away gift when I moved away to college, and that my 40th birthday present to myself was a trip to NYC to attend my first professional baking course. I suppose most everyone has some type of creative outlet. For me it's all about yeast and flour. Baking is an ancient craft. It's a science and an art. It has also been a dream, and I am fortunate that it is also now my business.
