Alhassan's story

Alhassan Kubratu is 42 years old. She is married and has four children, one son and three daughters. She says all of her children are still in school – senior and junior high school. She lives with her husband and children in a rented apartment in a farming/commercial town called Achiase, near Akim Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Her husband is a cocoa farmer. Alhassan is a trader. She trades in second hand textiles, clothes for both men and women and also bed linens. She also sells children’s wear. She purchases bales of textiles from Accra and sells in her community by hawking. She says she also treks to other towns to sell on their market days. She has been in business for fifteen years and desires to expand her business. She is hopeful to improve her standard of living and to give her children the best of education.
