Ruth Saana's Group
Ruth Saana N. is the leader of the Nezikokolima Kitega group. She is a tailor with a tailoring business in Kitega. Ruth makes clothes of all kinds, mostly making ladies and children's clothing for sale. She also sells clothing material from her business.
How Ruth’s business operates is that she buys materials from Kampala and brings them to her business in Kitega Some customers come and choose which ones to sew for them, while others come with their own materials for the same sewing.
This is her third loan with the group and she has been able to rise from 300,000 shillings to a million now. She is seeing the change in her business because now she has more clothes for sale, more customers, and more profits. She needs a new loan to buy more clothes and threads for sale. Ruth dreams of having many sewing machines and employing other people and, in the end, forming a sewing and tailoring school.
This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
