This small loan is being requested by five borrowers, all of whom live in the Slo Kram Commune in Siem Reap Province. The group leader, Mrs. S., age 36, has been buying and selling charcoal from her home for more than eight years. Her husband works as a staff member for the Cambodia company. The couple is very responsible to their two children, who are going to the local public school. S.'s business of selling charcoal is the main source of income for the family's daily expenses. S. needs capital from Kiva's partner HKL to purchase more charcoal to store for resale.

The other four members of loan include N., who is requesting a loan to increase capital in her charcoal-selling business; R., a homemaker who is seeking a loan to buy a motor for her family's needs and to use as capital for her husband's carpentry business; K., a perfume seller who is applying for a loan to purchase more perfume for sale; and S., who works as a staff member for a company and requests a loan to buy a motorbike for riding to work.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
