A loan helped to pay for a recently acquired booth for her money transfer business.

Mary's story

Mary is a young Zambian lady, aged 22. Mary comes from a humble family of hardworking Zambians. Her mother teaches in a local primary school, while her father is a craftsman making various goods that he displays along the road for locals. Mary also takes after her parents and has worked hard since completing high school. She first worked as a teller for a money transfer agent before deciding it was time to step up and take on more responsibility, and become a money transfer agent herself.

Coming from a humble background, Mary is hindered by a lack of capital to run her business, let alone expand it. She hopes that this Kiva loan can give her the much-needed footing and backing to establish and grow her business.

Mary one day hopes to be a nurse and work in the health sector, about which she is very passionate. Money earned from her money transfer business will help her to raise her tuition fees.

Mary also hopes to one day get married and have a few kids, and to diversify into farming as she gets older.

This loan is special because:

It expands access to mobile money in Zambia.
