Elena has a seamstress shop where she makes men's jackets and coats. She also travels to buy jackets and coats in Desaguadero (Peru) in order to have imported ones, as well, in her shop. She receives contracts from businesses or individuals to make the jackets or coats. She also increases her business by making exercise clothes and doing all sorts of sewing jobs. She doesn’t have permanent employees, but she creates jobs indirectly since it is her son who cuts the fabric and sends it to the homes of tailors so they can finish the process of assembling the clothing; she pays them for the finished work. She lives in the Tembladerani zone of the city of La Paz, which is also where she also has her shop. She has a place in the Eguino Plaza, in La Paz, where she sells her products individually or by the dozen. Elena has been a client of IMPRO since May 1998. Her history with our institution qualifies her as “Client 1”, which means she has earned the level “Good” in the repayment of her obligation. The amount requested will be used to buy materials (fabrics, zippers, thread, and decorations for the jackets and coats). Her job and credit history with IMPRO allow her to obtain this loan, since she has experience in her business, the income from which will cover the loan.

Additional Information

IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.

To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
