Mrs. Yim K., 57, has formed a loan group with the other four members. K. has been selected by the other members to be the leader.

Currently, she and her husband have jobs as local cultivators. In additionally, they are also fishing in and around Tunle Sap Lake which is an important place for fish to be found. The couple now lives with four children who are still single: two of them are employed working as massage staff in the hotel.

Recently, the family's investment is not going well because their equipment frequently breaks so that they can't catch as many fish as before. To solve the matter, K. would like a loan to purchase additional equipment for fishing activities.

The others borrowers are all people who live in Siem Reap Province. They are:

Mrs. P., who is a fisherman seeking a loan to buy a boat machine for her business. She was not available for the photograph so her husband is shown instead.

Mrs. S. is a rice farmer and a local fisherman and is requesting a loan to buy nets for fishing.

Mrs. C. sells groceries out of her home and needs a loan to increase her stock of groceries.

Mrs. P. is a fisherman applying for a loan to support her business operation.

About HKL

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
