A loan helped a member to increase the level and range of stock in her tuck-shop.

New Talk Group's story

The need for basic goods like bread, sugar, rice, and soft drinks has enabled people like Purity, a 21-year-old woman, to be in business through operating convenient stores. She has thus made life easier for the people in Crowborough North. She started her business in 2013. At that time, she only had one tuck-shop. She eventually managed to grow her business by opening another tuck-shop in August last year. She works at one of the tuck-shops as an attendant and has one employee who helps her in running the other.

Hard work and focus has been the key to Purity’s successes in her business. Purity has always dreamt of becoming an influential educated businessperson. Even though she is academically gifted, finances did not allow her to go further with her studies. She only managed to study as far as ordinary level. 2 years after school she got married and she has one child who is not yet going to school. Her husband is a self-employed barber in Crowborough North. Purity and her husband currently stay at her husband’s family house in Crowborough North. They hope one day that they will be able to buy their own house.

Purity and Kumbirai are members of the New Talk Group. They came to Thrive Microfinance in May last year. They received financial literacy training which helped them improve the way they run their businesses. Through profits made from the last loan, the two women managed to improve their businesses. For Purity the main benefit was opening another tuck-shop while Kumbirai added raising and selling poultry to her candle making business. The two women have come to Thrive Microfinance again this year applying for another loan of $900. Purity is applying for a loan of $500 because she wants to improve stock levels in her business.
