A loan helped a member to purchase a solar light and gain access to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer for maize cultivation.

Mary's Group's story

Mary is 43 years old and has 6 children. She is a group leader and is representing her group formed by 13 farmers in Chwele District, Kenya.

Mary has been farming with One Acre Fund for years now, having joined the program in 2011. She made this decision because of her desire to get the best quality fertilizer and hybrid seeds. Although she describes her last harvest as very good, she believes she can have a better one this year by continuing to work alongside One Acre Fund.

Mary will use part of her loan to purchase a solar light. She is very excited about the light, as it will allow her to reduce her consumption of paraffin fuel and save money. Obtaining this loan means that Mary's group will be able to purchase a total of 6 solar lights as well as farming inputs to plant a total of 6.5 acres.

In this group: Mary, Douglas, Getrude, Lilian M, Vincent, Everlyne, Judith, Mike, Jentrix, Nancy Mbirira, Joan, Benjamin, Kevin

This loan is special because:
