A loan of $3,000 helped to purchase calves in order to expand his business.

Olimjon's story

U. Olimjon is 30 years old. He is married with four children. Ever since he was young, he has been farming and raising animals. He has 4 hectares of land where he produces wheat and onions. And also he raises cattle and, little by little over time, he has been improving and expanding the business with the goal of improving his family’s standard of living and continuing to pay for his children’s school expenses.

IMON International has been a fundamental part of Olimjon´s business, having provided loans which have been used to purchase seeds, fertilizer and calves. Today, once again, Olimjon faces this need, and he trusts that his loan will be granted so that he can help his business and his family.

More about Tajikistan and IMON International

Tajikistan is perhaps best known for its rich history, which includes a key post along the Silk Road; the end of Alexander the Great's rule; and for it’s famous great thinkers, philosophers, scientists and poets such as: Rudaki, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Firdousi, Omar Haiyam, Jomi, Mavlavi Rumi and many others. The country is home to communities that still speak the ancient Sogdian language, epic mountain passes, and a civilization that dates back to the 4th millennium B.C. And, even today, it is a complex mixture of the Islamic faith, Soviet culture, New West culture and Central Asian traditions.

But, Tajikistan is also the poorest of the former Soviet republics. The civil war, which ignited soon after Tajikistan’s independence from the U.S.S.R., further damaged the already weak economy. In addition, 93% of the country is mountainous and only 7% of the land is arable. These conditions have resulted in high levels of unemployment and have forced hundreds of thousands to seek work in other countries, mainly Russia. While the people of Tajikistan are working to improve its agricultural production and manufacturing sector, nearly two-thirds of the population still live in abject poverty.
