Adding to basket
The members of the OYE 1 group are married women who are, on average, 32 years old with three children each. They all live in polygamous families in Bandiagara (fifth administrative region of Mali). They have joined Kiva's partner, the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso, in order to carry out their market gardening activities at the end of this rainy season. This is their second loan with the institution.
Hawa, the featured borrower, essentially grows onions. In the photo, she is in the front row, first from the left. She is planning to use her loan to buy seeds and fertilizers. After the harvest, she sells her crops to men and women, in the villages of Wadouba and Bandiagara. She is expecting to make a profit of 23,000 CFA francs at the end of the farming season. Thanks to this profit, she will be able to help her husband by covering some of the family's expenses (food, school fees and healthcare costs). She will reinvest the rest of the money in her activities.
