A loan helped to pay costs to look after their coffee farm.

Union Y Esfuerzo Community Bank's story

At 4,000 ft above sea level, a beautiful coffee farming community lays between the mountains of Lepaterique. They are the Union y Esfuerzo Community Bank. Their name, Union y Esfuerzo in English means "Unity and Effort", which is a testament to what they have accomplished as a group.

They have come to seek their very first Kiva loan to pay costs to look after their coffee farm, which includes farming inputs, fertilizers and maintenance for the group's coffee plant nursery. All these activities provide local employment when the coffee cutting season begins.

Union y Esfuerzo Community Bank have been working together for over 10 years with 32 members, of which 12 are female farmers who cut and dry coffee from their own land.

With your help, the community bank will be able to provide maintenance and farm their coffee more efficiently while providing for their families, bringing the community together in an activity that has been established in their lands for over 5 generations now.

Shown in the photograph are some of the members of the Union y Esfuerzo Community Bank.
