A loan helped to buy seeds, nylon, and agave to grow.

Sara's story

Sara lives in an agricultural area in the northwest area of Guatemala, in the department/state of Quiche. She is a 45-year-old Maya Sakapulteko woman, and she lives with her 20-year-old daughter and her husband. Both Sara and her husband work in agriculture. Despite the fact that she never went to school, Sara thinks it's important that her only daughter continue with her education.

Since she was little, Sara has been involved in agriculture because her parents worked in this activity. When she married at 18, she and her husband continued in this business. Now they sell a large quantity of product from the land they farm and from their house.

Sara has been a part of a communal bank for several cycles. Her business has grown, and now she sees the need to be a part of the new Puente de Amistad program “Puente al Éxito”. This program provides enterprising Guatemalan woman individual loans and business consulting to make her business grow. Due to the alliance between Puente de Amistad and Kiva, Manuela has approached Kiva lenders for her first individual loan. She plans to invest the loan in buying seeds, nylon and agave to divide the land into sections. She wants to take advantage of the last rains of the year for her crops, and in the dry season they use the drip system to use the water efficiently. Sara installed this technique thanks to the assistance of an agricultural engineer from Puente de Amistad.
