A loan helped a member to buy more products for the store in addition to shoes and clothes.

Comunicadoras Mayas Group's story

The enterprising woman is characterized as having an active spirit that brings her to look for strategies to overcome poverty. This is very true for a lot of the small business people that are clients of Puente de Amistad.

Juana, age 27, is one of them. She lives with her husband, and she has three children from seven months to six years old. Juana had the opportunity to go to school for 11 grades. In spite of the challenges, she took the initiative to start her own business four years ago. She has a small store store with products for daily consumption, cleaning, personal use, and shoes. As this business is in the city of Guatemala, she employs two people. At home Juana raises and sells chickens in order to get more earnings.

Juana is requesting a second Kiva loan. With the loan she plans to buy more products for the store in addition to shoes and clothes. She imagines having a larger inventory and increasing sales during the end of the year festivities.

The eight women in the Comunicadoras Mayas communal bank with the Puente de Amistad speak the Kaqchikel language. All of the women benefit from the monthly educational training, which is part of the Microcrédito Plus program (loans, education, medical attention) with Puente de Amistad. The information about budget, investment, and saving helps the women to run the businesses of textiles, stores, and clothing and shoe sales.

Thanks to the Kiva lenders for helping Juan and her colleagues in the communal bank.
