A loan helped to support a Peruvian Cocoa Association, improving incomes for its 485 smallholder farmers.

Association Of Ag Producers Of Naylamp De Somoro's story

The Association of Agricultural Producers Naylamp de Sonomoro - APANS was founded in 2004 and is made up of 485 cocoa-producing families.
APANS belongs to one of the poorest and most forgotten communities of producers in the Junín region, Naylamp de Sonomoro, a town in Peru that was a victim of the Shining Path terrorist group in the 1980s and 1990s and which still suffers from the violence of narco-terrorism.

However, the member families of APANS are strongly committed to generating sustainable prosperity for their community: they decided to produce high-quality cocoa with good agricultural practices. Through perseverance and effort, the families of APANS achieved their organic certification in 2010, and last year they successfully exported their first batches of cocoa. This is a crucial moment for the development of APANS, since reaching international markets requires a greater volume of capital than they can access today.

Kiva's financing will allow APANS member families to improve their access to the international market and scale their operations, generating better income and well-being for their community.
