A loan helped a member to purchase a large amount of thread.

Flor De Maria Sta Maria Group's story

The art of weaving, which combines threads, colors, and textures, is well-documented in the history of humanity. María does different types of traditional weaving. Her income, with that of her retired spouse, has served to support the family. She is the mother of 4 children over the age of 18, all with a higher education and married. María is a happy grandmother of 8 children.

She is 65 years old and has been a weaver for over 30 years. She learned the art of weaving from her mother and it has been a dream of hers to make it into a business. María is happy seeing her business grow and employing her two daughters and a niece to fill the orders. She asks for her first loan from Kiva to purchase a large amount of thread to stock the business's inventory for the entire year.

María is part of 7 women who make up the Friendship Bridge communal bank Flor de María Sta María and make their loan payments. These women's income is generated by their textile businesses. These women learn about effective business management practices, health, hygiene, and nutrition in their monthly meetings and, every two months, the women have access to health services. This is very important since the public health system in Guatemala fails the population. The combination of loans, education and health services is called Microcrédito Plus.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for financing these very necessary loans!
