A loan helped a member to buy fabric, lace, and decor as well as sausages.

Getzemani Group's story

The beautiful Maya K’iche women, who live in the department/state of Totonicapan, adorn themselves in their traditional lightweight, colorful blouses that are often adorned with lace, rhinestones and pearls. Twenty-eight-year-old Santa, a married mother of 3 children (18 mos.3,5 yrs.) has 2 sewing machines and is a talented seamstress. She takes custom orders from clients who live in her community. Her husband is a day laborer. Santa wants to enlarge her business and also to begin to sell sausages. She is requesting her 3rd Kiva loan to buy fabric, lace, and decor as well as sausages.

Santa has joined 7 Maya K’iche women, who live in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan, to participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. Their Trust Bank is called “Getzemani”. Since they have little or no formal education (Santa attended school for 2 yrs.), they benefit greatly from a monthly educational training designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share information. Topics range from nutrition, health, and hygiene to women’s empowerment and self esteem. Effective business management information helps them with their traditional textile businesses. Santa and her friends are eager to learn and can apply the new information to themselves and their families.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for learning about Santa and the Maya K’iche women in the Getzemani Trust Bank!
