A loan helped a member to buy many colors of thread for her weaving business.

Las Rosas Pocohil Group's story

Although they may have little or no formal education, the 32,000 women who participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care, look for ways to empower themselves, generate income and raise the standard of living for their families.

Veronica is one of these women. She is 24 years of age and is a married mother of two children who are 3 and 7 years of age. She works hard, along with her husband, in the family business weaving traditional wrap-around skirts or “cortes.” The couple has two employees who are able to help support their own families! Working three floor looms, the couple is able to deliver 18 “cortes” weekly. Veronica and an employee arrange all the thread, and her husband and another employee weave.

She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more thread. Veronice visualizes the future of her business growing with an additional employee who will help her community as well!

Veronica, along with 7 other Maya K’iche ladies, formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Rosas Pocohil” in the department/state of Quiche. These women are proud to be moving forward in their weaving businesses and fruit farms. Being able to access credit is crucial to their success, and they learn about effective business management practices, along with information about health, family matters and women’s issues in their monthly meetings. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors!
