Kunthea's story

Kunthea, 35, is a married woman with one child living in Angkor Chey District, Kampot Province. She is a conscientious rice farmer who owns and manages around two hectares of farmland. She works with her spouse, earning in the vicinity of $6 USD each day. She has been doing this for almost 10 years. Rice farming provides all of her family’s income. She aspires to achieve financial stability and provide her child with comfortable living conditions. With her many years of experience, Kunthea is an expert in taking care of her rice crops and ensuring abundant harvests each year, except for the year of a big flood. However, the way she does farming is still based on the traditional method.

Because of the shortage of her finances, she has applied for a loan of 2,000 USD to pay for land fill around her house. With this loan, she can pay for land fill and can provide her family members with a good environment and fresh air, and can protect them from illness. She will also be able to cover the mud around her house. When the process of land filling is finished, Kunthea plans to grow vegetables and raise some poultry to collect and sell in the local market. She plans to save her generated income gradually for her business expansion as well as for her child’s education.
