A loan helped a member to reforest pine forests to harvest sap.

El Oyamel Group's story

Alberto is the leader of the ejido council de Geráhuaro, Michoacán, México. He and his group have the noble labor of restoring the forest which they remember so well from their childhood. Through various efforts realized, they have managed to begin the work of reforestation with resin pines. They have the goal of reversing the damage which was caused by excessive logging.

Unfortunately, the economic resources they have are not enough to pay for all the work and materials necessary to do the care which the pines need for 10 years. The reestablishment of their forest will allow them, through the sap, to assure a financial income for over 70 years. In addition, it will allow them to attract tourism to the zone, since it is important to emphasize that what they are trying to do in this area is primarily to care for the entire planet, and not only the region.

Although they and their relatives will get direct support when the pines enter their productive period, the results will be favorable for the environment in general. So, councilman Alberto hopes to get support through Kiva to have the possibility to carry out this project as soon as possible, since they are sure that generating more pine trees will be an environmental, touristic, economic, and social benefit.
