Jeeranan

Jeeranan's story

Jeeranan lives in a rural village in Phrae Province, Thailand with her husband and four children. She and her family face the same challenges as many rural villagers: obstacles to employment, dependence on uncertain crop prices and a lack of formal education.

Prior to weaving hammocks, Jeeranan worked as a laborer in slash and burn farming. Agriculture in the part of Thailand where Lawan lives is far from easy.

Fortunately, Jeeranan was able to leave slash and burn agriculture behind recently and has taken on weaving full-time. Hammock weaving has not just been an excellent alternative, but a significant improvement to Jeeranan’s quality of life and provides a much-needed increase in income. The profits she earns from weaving hammocks goes towards household expenses and supporting her family. She is able to weave in the comfort of her home, which is especially important to her because her oldest son is disabled, and she can be home working while also caring for him. Prior to hammock weaving, she was often stuck working in the fields. This loan will help Jeeranan grow her hammock-weaving income by ensuring she has supplies and yarn to weave consistently through the coming year.
