Total loan: $450

BANTEAY CHMAR, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia / Arts

Sophy's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy silk and pay for it to be dyed and prepared for the loom so she can weave her scarves.

Sophy's story

Sophy is from Banteay Chmar, a village in the northwest of Cambodia. She is 23 years old and lives in a wooden house with her two parents and her young brother. Her family owns 1.5 hectares of land on which they grow cassava. She just returned to live with her parents because she and her husband divorced after three years of marriage.

In 2015 she was trained how to weave silk scarves by Kiva's field partner Soieries du Mékong. This organization is a social enterprise which fights against rural exodus and for empowerment of women by training them and offering them sustainable work in the village.

Sophy’s scarves are sold in Cambodia and Europe. She uses her weaving income to pay for the family expenses. Thanks to a 450 USD loan, she will buy silk and pay for it to be dyed and prepared for the loom.

Please support Sophy so she can keep weaving beautiful, traditional, hand-woven scarves!
