Mujeres Luchadoras Chajnes Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy various colors and textures of thread as well as more traditional clothing to sell.

Mujeres Luchadoras Chajnes Group's story

San Juan Sacatepéquez is a town surrounded by fields of flowers, corn, beans, sugar cane, coffee and vegetables. Many of the farmers, who work hard in these fields, take their cultivated crops to Guatemala City where they can sell them for the most income, especially the beautiful, multi-colored flowers that visitors find to be quite economical.

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Luchadoras Chajnes" (shown here) was formed by 12 visionary women who share the common dream of empowering themselves and their families. Their average age is 40 years old and the ladies have large families.

The President of the Trust Bank is Aura, who is 38 years old and has a weaving business. Her parents did not permit her to go to school since school was not necessary for girls. Instead, she stayed home and helped with the household chores.

However, this did not limit Aura because she had a vision of who she wanted to be. She is now a competent weaver of “cortes” (traditional wrap around skirts), and huipiles (ornately embroidered and woven traditional blouses). She also raises chickens and pigs. Aura is requesting a loan to buy various colors and textures of thread as well as more traditional clothing to sell.

A majority of the 22,000 clients of Friendship Bridge have had little or no formal education and are just like Aura. Non-formal education is the backbone of the “Microcredit Plus” Program of the organization (loans + education).

Friendship Bridge is very pleased to collaborate with partners like KIVA to provide loans for these ladies. With their new tools, the women are taking steps toward a brighter and happier future benefitting themselves, their families and their community of San Juan Sacatepequez.

Thank you, KIVA investors!
