Costureras Barrio 2 Group's story
The 8 women who make up “Costureras Barrio 2”, or “The Tailors of Neighborhood 2” trust bank who live in San Marcos La Laguna, a beautiful peaceful town that rests beside Lago Atitlán in Western Guatemala, want investors to know how happy they are to be supported in their growth as business women through Kiva. Rosa, the group president, is 33 years old and studied through 4th grade. She has been with Friendship Bridge for 3 years, and really likes the opportunities she has received through this organization. Rosa has been able to see growth in her business, a convenient store where she sells items of basic daily consumption, as well as fruit, perfumes, and “fajas”, which are traditional. In order to expand her business Rosa is requesting a loan, with which she will be able to buy inventory for the story including, rice, noodles, sugar, oil, oat meal, beans, eggs, among other products. Most if the women in Costureras 2 are married, but there are several single mothers in the group who are managing their businesses and caring for their families without the support of a spouse. The businesses they run are various, some selling fresh produce, others selling corn, running cake shops, convenient stores, or weaving and selling clothing and other textile products traditional to San Marcos. With 3 years of work in Friendship Bridge and Kiva, these women are thankful for the credits which give them the opportunity to grow. The group meetings each month bring motivation, and the workshops offered by Friendship Bridge excite the women, always teaching them something new, interesting, and helpful.
