Mariam's story

Ms. Mariam D., age 51, is a widow and the mother of 5 children. She lives in a polygamous family with her co-wife and their children in the Pelengana Nord district of Ségou (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). Having abandoned school prematurely, she very soon started working to earn an income. She learned this from her mother, who used to market grain. After having done several kinds of work, she ended up choosing commerce in clothing, shoes, blankets, and bed sheets. She’s been in this business for 15 years and enjoys much popularity and fame in her area.

Concerned with bolstering and diversifying her business, she turned to the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso, which she has had an association with for 30 months. After 3 solidarity loans (group loans) and 2 individual loans, all correctly repaid, she is now on her third individual loan. She will use this loan to buy 20 sets of blankets and bed sheets, 10 pairs of shoes, and 10 outfits of embroidered pagnes. Supplies are gotten in Bamako or in Burkina Faso, and sales are made to customers composed of men and women, cash or credit accepted.

With this loan, she intends to realize a monthly profit of 100,000 francs CFA that will enable her to pay the school costs and insurance for her children. Her ambition is to clear a plot of land for living on.
