Metropolitana (Portoviejo) Group's story

The Metropolitana credit group meets every fortnight in the town of Portoviejo. The group comprises 10 women and 2 men who formed this group which has helped them to improve their small businesses thanks to the loans. They all work in different areas of business such as agriculture, general commerce, services and other activities. One member of this group is Zumilda, 55, who is a widow and mother to 8 adult children, 2 of whom still live with her. Zumilda is a woman who has had to work in order to get ahead. She makes a living selling handicrafts, and travels around the city and other areas where she has many customers who buy her products. She bought a space called La Pila where many craftsmen produce a variety of handicrafts in all shapes and sizes. Zumilda has been making a living doing this for over 2 years now. This loan will be used to buy various handicrafts. Zumilda has been a member of the credit group since the beginning and she likes it because the loans allow her to finance her business. Her dream is to get ahead and to remain healthy. The small photo is of two members who could not be present when the group photo was taken.
