A loan helped to buy more medicine to fill her pharmacy.

Claveles De Haciendita Group's story

The Friendship Bridge “Claveles de Haciendita”, with its 12 members, is located in Chiantla, Huehuetenango - a city of about 207 square miles and 6,500 feet above sea level. The area is known for its mining activities, but there are also lush green forests and acres of land under cultivation for produce. Olga is 33-years-old and a member of the “Claveles de Haciendita". Olga, along with her husband, is a farmer. They grow a large quantity of different vegetables. Besides helping her husband to farm, Olga also has a small pharmacy that she opened just 10 months ago. It has seen a great deal of success in her community. She joined “Claveles de Haciendita” in order to get a loan to buy more medicine to fill her pharmacy. Her goal is to generate a large enough income that will support her children’s education. Two of Olga’s three children are already attending school, but in Guatemala a child’s education is financed by the parents. In the primary grades, parents need to buy all the supplies, from books to paper etc. Then, in middle school, they must pay a portion of their child’s education plus their school supplies. The women of “Claveles de Haciendita” are very grateful for the trust that KIVA investors around the world have given them by providing funds for their loans. The funds have helped them develop their businesses, create stronger families, and provide an education for their children. This has improved the quality of their lives and made their futures brighter through the successes of their small businesses.
