Wonderful Group's story

Crowborough car park is an area characterized by activity. One hears the sounds of hooting cars as transporters call to clients seeking transportation to the Central Business District, the sounds of vendors calling out competitively to clients, and the booming of radios from parked cars and shops. It is a place where different people congregate, trying to earn a living for themselves and their families. It is this hub of activity where Anna plies her trade.

Anna is a 41-year-old married mother of school-going children. Once or twice a week, she goes to different wholesalers around the city of Harare looking for the cheapest prices. This way, she can fairly charge her customers while, at the same time, she can make a profit. She sells groceries and other food stuffs at a corner stall every day of the week. Her line of business earns her little profits per item, hence the need to sell large volumes so as to attain substantial profits. This means that Anna has to always be on her toes and be on top of her game to be above her competitors, who includes fellow vendors and shops around the car park.

Wonderful Group was formed when Anna and other women came together and decided to seek additional funds to spruce up their businesses. They attended training sessions at Thrive Microfinance and got a group loan. The women used their individual loans wisely and paid their installments very well. Anna and two other members came back for a second loan from Thrive Microfinance. She feels that this loan will take her business to greater heights. With her previous loan, Anna was able to restock her products in bulk, saving her on transport costs and thereby increasing her income levels. She has also added onto her house. Additionally, she is helping her husband in providing for the needs of their children.

Anna has big plans. With this loan, she is planning on growing her business further. She wants to now operate from a bigger and built-up structure so that the weather elements do not affect her business as her products will be protected.
